…for our history now descends from a kingdom of gold to one of iron and rust… – Cassius Dio

The Senate and People of Rome have existed for over a thousand years. From the arid hills of Libya to the Caledonian highlands they have made deserts of their enemies’ kingdoms and proclaimed peace to the world. Now, two hundred years after the crucifixion of the Jewish Messiah, the Roman Empire totters on the brink of destruction: barbarians assail its far-flung borders, usurpers conspire at the heart of its great cities, and ancient evils rise from long forgotten vaults to feast on the suffering and desperation of the people. It is an age of iron and rust. It is a time for heroes and dreamers to rise and fight for the glory of Rome… or destroy it once and for all…

ZENOBIA is an historical fantasy system written by Paul Elliott for traditional roleplaying campaigns in the 3rd century. While ZENOBIA does contain some fantasy elements, it is basically a sword and sandal romp through the worlds of classical antiquity. Our campaign is more or less based on historical settings, events, and characters, but the plot is ultimately decided by what is, or could be, fun.

The setting for ZENOBIA is the Near East—modern day Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel & Palestine, and Iraq—an age-old battleground of civilizations. The principle political powers in the region are the eternal Empire of Rome and the mighty Sassanid Dynasty of Persia. Click the links to view a description of each power.

If you are new, feel free to browse the wiki pages, adventure logs, and character profiles. Interested in the campaign? Drop us a message and we will try to reply in a timely fashion. The Imperial mail service can be rather unreliable in these troublesome times.

Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that all was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, and make it possible. – T. E. Lawrence
